This fly can represent an emerging caddisfly and is very effective for dead drifting, or you can gently lift it at the end of the drift, at which point you'll get plenty of strikes.
It's a must-have fly in every angler's fly box. It's not an imitation of a particular insect, but rather a general pattern that fish take time and time again.
The Rust Spanish Fly is a suggestive rather than a specific imitation of a nymph found in nature. I've had success with this fly year-round, but it really becomes effective when insect activity starts to increase with the rising water temperature.
It's an extremely versatile fly that can be fished effectively in a variety of ways.
I use it as a search fly to try and find out how deep the trout are feeding. In flat, calm conditions, I use it on the top in the 2.5mm size.
I have no idea why. In the summer, on bright, sunny days, I use it to fish deep, very close to the bottom. I've caught some really good-sized trout and sea trout using this method.
I've caught a lot of fish with the Rust Spanish Fly. Why? I don't know. It just works.
